New CPT Codes for COVID-19 Care Will Support APCD Analysis
In early September, the American Medical Association (AMA) published two additional Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes specifically addressing medical services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the total number of new COVID-related CPT codes to 8.
The first new code, 99072, was added in for health care practitioners across the country hoping to curtail the spread of COVID-19, while providing high-quality care to all those who need it. The second, 86413, was approved in response to the development of laboratory tests that provide quantitative measurements of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, as opposed to a qualitative assessment (positive/negative) of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which will continue to be reported with the previous CPT codes.
“The CPT code set continues to quickly adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic to streamline the reporting of innovative tools and services now available to help reduce the COVID-19 disease burden, improve health outcomes and reduce long-term care costs,” AMA President Susan Bailey said in a news release.
This table has an additional list of CPT codes and ICD-10 diagnostic codes that can be used for COVID-19 analysis. As the pandemic continues and new CPT codes emerge to capture analytic needs, APCD Journal will continue to update our sources for easy reference.
